Ford Adding V-10 Gas Engine
Ford Motor Co. will offer a gasoline engine in its F650-750 medium-duty chassis cab trucks beginning in 2012.
The 6.8-liter V-10 will be rated at 362 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque.
The engine should fill a power gap in Classes 6 and 7 medium-duty trucks which was created when General Motors withdrew from the sector. GM’s V-10 gasoline engine was a popular option with state, municipal and private fleets as a lower-priced alternative to the recent generations of costly emission-controlling diesel engines.
Ford’s engine will be mated with the six-speed TorqShift automatic transmission. It will include a live drive power takeoff and double overdrive gears. The live drive PTO features an output linked directly to the engine crankshaft providing ‘live’ PTO operation any time the engine is running, regardless of vehicle speed. It will power PTO-driven accessories such as dump bodies, sprayer pumps, generators, salt spreaders and snowplows.
An alternative fuels engine prep package will be available as well. The conversion option, which will become available this fall on F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cab trucks that use the 6.8-L V-10, enables the use of compressed natural gas or propane (liquefied petroleum gas).
Ford will begin taking orders for the V-10 for the F-650-750 chassis cab trucks in the fourth quarter of 2011.
