UPS Sets Fleetwide Fuel Efficiency Goal
UPS has announced an initiative to improve the fuel mileage of its entire U.S. package delivery fleet by 20 percent between 2000 and 2020.
The plan, announced in the company’s annual sustainability report, builds on UPS’ earlier effort to improve the fuel efficiency of its 60,000 vehicle fleet by 10% during 2000 - 2009.
In 2009, UPS drivers logged 77.3 million more miles than in 2000, yet burned 3.2 million fewer gallons of fuel, the company said. UPS attributed the improvements to improved vehicle technology, vehicle maintenance procedures, routing technology and an effort to minimize engine idling.
Deployment of alternative fuel vehicles has also contributed to the gains, UPS said. The package delivery company’s fleet includes nearly 2,000 alternative fuel vehicles, including 245 that run on compressed natural gas.
